Events

'Seminary Education and Ministerial Training: Shi’ite and Christian Perspectives'

14 June, 15:30 to 16 June, 17:30, The Business School, Mill Hill Road, Durham
Organised by the DGI in partnership with the Department of Theology and Religion , the Islamic College of London, and the Durham Shi'ite Studies Programme.
The history, terminology and methodology of seminary education remain relatively unexplored by scholars from other religious and academic traditions. This conference aims to bridge this gap by offering a comparative platform through which principles relating to Shi'ite and Christian learning can be exchanged. As an historic seat of Christian learning and seminary studies, Durham represents a truly magnificent setting for this event.
Eight panels will be hosted over the course of this three-day conference focusing on:
  • The History and Development of Seminary Schools
  • The Structure, Syllabus and Format of Seminary Education.
  • The Role of Legal Theory and Hermeneutics.
  • Educational Approaches to Philosophy and Rationality.
  • Ethics, Spirituality and Mysticism.
  • Methodological Issues of Seminary Education.
  • The Social Impact of Seminary Schools.
  • Interactions between Shi'ite and Christian Seminary Education.
If you are interested in attending this conference, please complete and return this registration form no later than Monday 7th of June
Contact dgi@durham.ac.uk for more information about this event.

Conference Neutrality and Theory of Law

Conference Neutrality and Theory of Law

Five years ago we began, with much enthusiasm, an editorial project with grand expectations for quality and modest ones concerning diffusion. Our aim was to start a book collection in the field of Philosophy of Law embracing both, translations of key books from other legal cultures, thus making them available to Spanish-speaking readers, as well as original works. Five years later the results have surpassed all diffusion forecasts and we honestly believe that they have played a part in the iusphilosophical debate.
Today, the collection is made up of more than thirty published volumes with eighteen more underway. Marcial Pons publishers in junction with the research groups in Philosophy of Law from the Universidad de Girona and the Universidad Pompeu Fabra (to whom the directors of the collection belong, Jordi Ferrer y José Juan Moreso)) are organizing an international conference commemorating the first fifty volumes which will take place the 20th , 21st and 22nd of May 2010 in the Spanish city of Girona.
Our aim is that the conference will be a meeting place for authors and readers of our books. For this reason twelve authors from the collection will be speakers at the event Dr. Robert Alexy, Dr. Juan C. Bayón, Dr. Brian Bix, Dr. Eugenio Bulygin, Dr. Bruno Celano, Dr. Jules L. Coleman, Dr. Riccardo Guastini, Dr. Brian Leiter, Dr. Jorge Luis Rodríguez, Dr. Frederick Schauer, Dr. Scott J. Shapiro, Dr. Wilfrid J. Waluchow. We have chosen the theme "neutrality and theory of Law" as the backbone of the speeches because it is one of the most frequently found, either directly or indirectly, in the books of the collection
Our objective is to offer an event of the utmost magnitude in the iusphilosophical debate that will gather the different legal traditions, addressed specifically toward the Hispanic-American community.

"Juliane Hammer has written an excellent book that captures the Palestinian experience of exile, life in the Diaspora, and return to Palestine."
—Philip Mattar, United States Institute for Peace, editor of Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East and North Africa
"Juliane Hammer's book is a welcome addition to the relatively meager literature on Palestinians who were born in exile and "returned" to Palestine...."
Journal of Palestine Studies
In the decade following the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords, some 100,000 diasporic Palestinians returned to the West Bank and Gaza. Among them were children and young adults who were born in exile and whose sense of Palestinian identity was shaped not by lived experience but rather through the transmission and re-creation of memories, images, and history. As a result, "returning" to the homeland that had never actually been their home presented challenges and disappointments for these young Palestinians, who found their lifeways and values sometimes at odds with those of their new neighbors in the West Bank and Gaza.

This original ethnography records the experiences of Palestinians born in exile who have emigrated to the Palestinian homeland. Juliane Hammer interviews young adults between the ages of 16 and 35 to learn how their Palestinian identity has been affected by living in various Arab countries or the United States and then moving to the West Bank and Gaza. Their responses underscore how much the experience of living outside of Palestine has become integral to the Palestinian national character, even as Palestinians maintain an overwhelming sense of belonging to one another as a people.

Ibn 'Arabi Society Symposium - annual conferences in the UK and USA

Ibn 'Arabi Society Symposium - annual conferences in the UK and USA

The Symposium

Each year the Society organizes Symposia in the U.K. and the U.S.A. on an aspect of Ibn 'Arabi's work.

These international gatherings bring together people from many different fields and traditions, and include scholars, students, and anyone interested in what Ibn 'Arabi has to say. These events provide a unique opportunity for both speakers and delegates, specialists and non-specialists, to enrich their understanding of the Shaykh's teachings and their relevance today. The Society also encourages public seminars and lectures and can provide speakers on request.

About the venue – Worcester College

Worcester College Main Quadrangle The Linbury Building

Worcester College is close to the centre of Oxford, within easy reach of coaches, trains, and many places to eat. If you knew Oxford, but had never been into the college, you would be amazed at the extent of its gardens, which provide a beautiful setting for the Linbury Building, a purpose built conference room where the symposium is held.

Worcester is one of 38 independent, self-governing colleges at Oxford University. Worcester College, in its current form, was founded only in 1714, but there has been a place of learning on the property since Gloucester College was founded for the Benedictine order in 1283. Cottages dating back to the 15th century are still in use.
